What is pride month?
Celebrated every June, pride month is a time to honour the LGBTQ+ community and commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969 - a major turning point for LGBTQ+ rights. It's a month filled with parades, events, and activities that promote acceptance, equality, and love.
Why does it matter in the workplace?
It’s a reminder of the importance of inclusivity and the power of standing together against discrimination. For workplaces, it's an opportunity to show support and make a meaningful impact. When employees feel accepted and valued for who they are, they’re more engaged, productive, and loyal.
But did you know that only 33% believe their employer is very supportive/inclusive towards LGTBQ+ in the workplace? With 41% believing there’s room for improvement and a further 15% disclosing that there is little or no support.
How can workplaces be more inclusive and supportive? (Spoiler alert: It's not just changing the companies logo...)
Host Pride Events: Events can educate employees about the history and significance of Pride while also providing a platform for celebration.
Share LGBTQ+ Employees’ Stories: Personalise the celebration, make it more meaningful for everyone. Share these stories through blog posts, social media, or internal newsletters.
Promote Allyship: Provide training on how to support LGBTQ+ colleagues. Workshops on topics like using inclusive language and understanding pronouns can make a huge difference.
Provide Resources and Support: E.g. support groups, mental health resources, or educational materials. Providing these resources shows a commitment to the well-being of all employees.
Partner with LGBTQ+ Organisations: Collaborate with local LGBTQ+ organisations for events, fundraising, or volunteer opportunities. This supports the community and shows your commitment to making a difference.
Advice for LGBTQ+ Individuals Seeking Support
Start by identifying allies within your organisation e.g. a supportive colleague, an HR representative, or a diversity and inclusion officer. Clearly communicate your needs, whether it's requesting a more inclusive language policy, seeking mental health resources, or suggesting the formation of an LGBTQ+ employee resource group.
REMEMBER: Your voice is important, and asking for support not only benefits you but also contributes to a more inclusive workplace for everyone.
Pride Month is obviously a fantastic time to celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community... but remember, the commitment to diversity and inclusion should last all year. By embracing these values, we are continuing to create a workplace where everyone can thrive by bringing their authentic selves to work every day.
