Get to know Tom Elliott, our Senior Recruitment Consultant who specialises in recruiting Contract Business Support professionals across the Northern Ireland market
Today, we sat down with one of our newest team members, Tom, so you can find out more about him and how he can help with your next career move or Business Support hire!
What did you do before working in recruitment?
“Before starting with VANRATH, I worked in recruitment within the family business. Mainly working in the travel retail sector, I was responsible for in-house recruitment across airports in the north of England and Scotland. Taking candidates through the full circle of the recruitment process from initial screening through to personally offering the available positions.”
What motivated you to pursue a career in recruitment and which specific area and roles do you specialise in now?
“Having handled in-house recruitment in my previous role, it really gave me an idea of how rewarding the recruitment industry can be! For that reason, I wanted to take the leap and step away from the family business to pursue a career in the recruitment industry full-time.
“I now specialise in the recruitment of contract Business Support roles across both the public and private sectors, ranging from Customer Service Advisors to Office Managers, Operation Managers and more.”
What do you enjoy most about working in the Business Support recruitment industry?
“With the Business Support industry covering such a vast range of roles, no two days are the same! I enjoy the variety that comes with my specialised area - that along with the rewarding nature of recruitment itself makes it a very enjoyable industry to work in!”
What are your favourite aspects of this field and how do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and market insights?
“My favourite aspect is the variety that comes with the industry, to stay up-to-date I actively engage with industry news from various sources. One of my go-to platforms is LinkedIn, where I follow influential professionals, join relevant groups and engage in insightful discussions.
“I also attend industry events and make an effort to network and connect with professionals in the industry. It's fascinating to witness the latest trends, emerging technologies and breakthroughs shared by experts in my field.”
Why should clients and candidates each consider working with a recruitment consultant for their next role?
“When it comes to clients, they should consider working with a recruitment consultant as it allows them to take the stress off the recruitment process by allowing experts in the industry to screen and shortlist potential candidates which allows them to focus on their own areas in greater detail.
“In regard to candidates, by working with a Recruitment Consultant, they have peace of mind that they will only be put forward for jobs that are the right roles for them and they have someone fighting their corner when it comes to negotiating terms.”
What are some in-demand job roles in this area and what top skills are employers looking for in the Business Support Sector?
“Some of the most in-demand roles in the Business Support industry at the moment include Operations Manager roles, Project Manager roles and Customer Support roles.
“In terms of the skills that employers are looking for, communication is key. As simple as it sounds, everyone in a Business Support role will need strong communication skills in order to succeed.”
When it comes to candidates, what would you say are their main motivations when it comes to deciding on a new role?
“Everyone has their own motivations when it comes to deciding on a new role, whether that be career progression, salary increase, being closer to family or looking to change industries completely to take on a new challenge. However, the main motivator does seem to be salary!”
What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of work?
“Outside of work I am a keen rugby player! Having taken 7 years out following my school rugby career, and a serious knee injury, I went back to it last season, playing my trade for Lisburn Rugby Club. I am also an avid golfer playing at Edenmore Golf Club.”
Can you share with us a fun fact or unique skill that not many people know about you?
“A fun fact about me is while on rugby tour in Wales, I was given the award for ‘Worst Singer on the Bus’!”
